Root canal treatment (also called endodontic therapy) is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage within the pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth). It involves removing the infected or inflamed pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then filling and sealing it to prevent future infection.
The procedure helps save natural teeth that might otherwise need to be extracted. After a root canal, a crown or filling is usually placed to restore the tooth’s strength and function.
Root canal treatment is typically done under local anesthesia and is often no more painful.
